It’s officially the Christmas season and I could not be more excited! After we got married, I said we should make it a tradition to wait until after Thanksgiving to put our tree and decorations up, but l quickly realized that I just can’t wait that long! This year I put our tree up about a week before Thanksgiving. I love decorating for Christmas and it makes me so happy seeing the tree and all the other decor up, so I say the earlier they’re up, the better! Plus, living in Alaska, once the snow falls (and sticks) it already feels like the holidays to me. Haha.
I like to come up with different color themes every year so our tree doesn’t always look the same. The first year we were married, I did gold and silver. The next year was navy blue, white, and silver. The year after that was red, green, and gold. And last year was navy blue, white, and rose gold. I like to look on Pinterest for inspiration and I totally fell in love when I saw black and white Christmas decor. There’s something so timeless about black and white — you can never go wrong!
Since I promised Danny Ray I wouldn’t buy any new ornaments, I decided to use white and champagne gold ornaments with black and white ribbon. The ribbon is from Michaels. I actually didn’t buy enough to go around the whole tree, so they only go across the front of the tree. If you look at our tree from the side, it looks very incomplete, lol. The flocked tree picks and wooden shiplap star are also from Michaels. I really want to get a flocked Christmas tree one day because I love the way they look, but I can only imagine how messy they are!
The little chalkboard signs are from Bullseye’s Playground at Target. I cut out the phrases on my Silhouette and painted them onto the signs. I also DIY’d some ornaments (oops, I guess I did buy new ornaments!) — one says “The Canlas Family”, one says “Jaiden’s Chr1stmas 2017”, and the rest I drew irregular polka dots with a black sharpie.
As you can imagine, black and white are not traditional Christmas colors, so it’s hard to find any decor to match. I had some leftover wood laying around from a past project, so I made the “merry & bright” sign. The glitter trees and reindeer are things I bought a few years ago.
On our mantel, I have the chicken wire frame I made last year to display all the Christmas cards. The two little trees are from Michaels. The reindeer is also from Michaels, but I purchased that a couple years ago. The sled was from Bullseye’s Playground last year. The bottom was originally red, but I decided to paint it black to match the rest of my decor. The infamous ceramic houses are from Bullseye’s Playground. I went crazy trying to look for these! I even had my good friend Lin checking Target for me because I wanted them so bad! I had almost given up hope, but one afternoon I went to Target to pick up a couple things I needed. I was actually waiting in line at Starbucks to buy Jasmine a drink when I turned around and spotted them from afar. I immediately got out of line to grab them because they were the last two left! The felt garland is also from Bullseye’s Playground. Target has really stepped their game up this year with the Christmas decor! They had lots of other cute signs but none of them matched my theme so I didn’t buy any of it. All our stockings, including Rambo’s, are from Target. I love these plaid ones from the Hearth and Hand collection! They match so perfectly!
Other than a wreath on our front door and a couple wreaths hanging on the lights outside of the garage, I don’t really decorate outside or any other part of the house. I did, however, give Jasmine her own little tree to decorate this year and she loves it! It’s in her and Jaiden’s room. She loved hanging the ornaments on the branches. Like mother, like daughter.
